Characterisation of the Ventilation Efficiency of Decentralised Mechanical Ventilation Units in School Classrooms

2026
An experimental campaign conducted in two school classrooms in the province of Pavia investigated the performance of decentralised controlled mechanical ventilation systems during normal teaching activities. Using occupant-generated CO₂ as a tracer gas, simultaneous monitoring within the breathing zone and in the system airflow streams made it possible to assess ventilation efficiency and the system’s ability to remove contaminants from the occupied zone. Tests conducted at different airflow rates were used to examine the spatial distribution of indoor air quality and to investigate the interaction between air supply, furniture layout, and occupant distribution.
