Labs System
Labs System
The ABCLab Laboratory System is a strategic unit that groups together and coordinates the laboratories of the department, making available tools, technologies and highly qualified skills to support teaching, basic and applied research, experimentation and industrial research in the construction sector.
The ABCLab Laboratory System
The System is structured into Experimental Units with their own scientific and technical autonomy, divided into HARD, SOFT, OFFLab, and LivingLab.
Hard and Soft Units of the department support the department’s strategic research lines.
OFFLab Units promote frontier research and the practical application of innovations through strategic partnerships with external entities, such as leading construction companies, public institutions, and national and international stakeholders.
Living Labs are cutting-edge infrastructures for research on sustainable development and social innovation.
Large Infrastructures
Equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and highly qualified research teams, they are dedicated to scientific and technological innovation. Their mission is experimentation, collaboration, training, technology transfer, and services to the region.
A driving force for the development of new technologies and the training of highly specialized professionals.
LPM – Laboratorio prove Materiali is the Large Infrastructure affiliated with the ABC Department.

Interdepartmental Laboratories
The ABC Department, through selected faculty members and Units of the Laboratory System, takes part in the scientific activities of 12 Interdepartmental Laboratories.
ArchMat Lab — Caratterizzazione di materiali dell’architettura tradizionale ed innovativa
DATACLOUD – Cloud, Data Science, Big Data
FUNTASMA – Functional Sintered Materials
GEOLab — Laboratorio di Geomatica e Osservazione della Terra
I.Drive – Interaction between Driver Road-Infrastructure Vehicles and Environment
ISmicroLAB – In-Situ Micromechanics Laboratory
PSVL — Polimi Sound and Vibration Laboratory
TextilesHuB – Laboratorio interdipartimentale di ricerca sui tessili e i materiali polimerici
WE-COBOT LAB – Wearable and collaborative robotics Laboratory

NextBuild Living Lab
The NextBuild Living Lab, created through the synergy of the 3DSurvey Group, Gicarus, Eidolon, and L@rs units, has transformed the Department itself into a “living laboratory” thanks to the implementation of indoor and outdoor sensor systems.
The project also involved the development of a platform for data collection and visualization, along with a “smart pop-up” communication system designed to encourage users to adopt virtuous behaviors in their use of space, with a focus on safety, comfort, health, and energy efficiency.
The goal is to enable the built environment to fully express its potential for sustainability, while meeting users’ needs for health and well-being. This approach embraces the holistic vision of people-centered design, extending also to the analysis of behavior triggers and the identification of effective alternatives.
Project Portfolio
The production of the units generates a wide catalog of outputs that encompass all the scientific and technical expertise of the department applied to the construction sector. These outputs are the result of collaboration with key stakeholders, including engineering firms, design studios, public administrations, construction companies, and building asset managers.
