The day brought a crucial theme back to the forefront: strengthening the planning capacity of Public Administration to support the renewal of Italy’s healthcare infrastructure. In a country where many hospitals are more than fifty years old and 60% of healthcare facilities are over 70 years old, the strong link between good programming and good design clearly emerged, highlighting how the renewal of public healthcare buildings represents a strategic priority that requires technical expertise, planning capabilities, and adequate financial tools.
Speakers and guests shared experiences on funding, procedures, and public–private partnership models, looking at new opportunities for the sector. Topics at the center of the discussion included: tools and processes for public programming, national and regional funds for healthcare construction, new models of public–private cooperation, and experiences and perspectives on financing hospital infrastructure. The initiative, which involved over 110 participants, is part of the national Forum promoted by the ABC Department and the Design & Health Lab of the Politecnico di Milano, aimed at technical staff from hospital organizations, public decision-makers, regional managers, and private-sector operators.
In the final round table, the General Directors of Ospedale Niguarda in Milan, ASST Valle Olona, and ASST Spedali Civili in Brescia, together with representatives from CDP Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, shared visions, challenges, and tools to make complex construction projects in the healthcare sector achievable. The Forum also includes contributions from representatives of the Council of State, DIPE, the Lombardy Region, and the General Directorates of Hospital Companies, and is accredited by the Order of Architects and the Order of Lawyers.
