Crowdsourcing public perception of landscapes: Towards pan-European platforms in support of landscape research and spatial planning
Romanos Ioannidis (Principal Investigator)
PUBLICLAND addresses the persistent challenge of quantifying public perception of landscapes in research and planning. By utilizing a bottom-up crowdsourcing scheme via a dedicated mobile application, the project enables citizens and students across four European countries to directly register georeferenced opinions on their living environments. The research aims to advance active citizen science platforms and demonstrate how large-scale, participatory data can improve the scientific understanding of landscape quality. Key outcomes include the assessment of existing architectural works and the development of innovative spatial planning tools to better integrate infrastructure, such as renewable energy, into the landscape. Ultimately, the project seeks to bring landscape policy closer to public needs, supporting European sustainability goals like the New European Bauhaus and the Green Deal.
