Achille Cristiana

Associate Professor

His research focuses on measurement and representation, particularly of Cultural Heritage and the urban context. He is dedicated to the study of new technologies for surveying and data management. He participates in several projects, both nationally and internationally, aimed at accurate, complete, and rapid 3D surveys of complex architecture and large monumental sites. He teaches Surveying Techniques. He has extensive experience in innovative educational activities, having organized summer schools and school programs focused on 3D digital surveying and data sharing since 2010, activities aimed specifically at the world of Cultural Heritage.

Research

Scientific director, together with Professor Francesco Fassi, of the 3DSurvey Group laboratory of the ABC Department of the Polytechnic University of Milan, the laboratory is part of the ABCLab departmental laboratory system. The laboratory is currently a highly international research group composed of PhD students, research fellows, and interns of various nationalities. The laboratory's research activities fall within the field of geomatics (topography, photogrammetry) and concern surveying and measurement in the architectural/archaeological fields, with a particular focus on cultural heritage. The laboratory specializes in three-dimensional surveying in the archaeological field to support excavation operations, architectural surveying for the survey of complex architecture, and environmental surveying. Other research areas include reality-based three-dimensional modeling at large (1:20, 1:50) and very large (1:1) scales, the creation of dedicated information systems (web platforms) to support building maintenance and conservation operations, 3D GIS, and cartography; Structural monitoring (precision topography). Several national and international collaborations have emerged from joint research activities at the doctoral level, summer schools, and participation in competitive calls, which have encouraged incoming and outgoing visiting doctoral students and scientific exchange/collaboration. In addition to research activities, the Laboratory also provides teaching support, training, and tutoring.
